Join the Forefront of the Green Transition: Shape the Future of Biotech with 21st.BIO!
At 21st.BIO, we're not just another biotech company; we are the vanguards of a revolution. Fueled by the determination to shape a healthier and more sustainable world, we are developing a technology platform that will profoundly disrupt the bioeconomy. Our dream? To engineer the future of sustainable foods, materials, and bioag solutions through the art of fermentation.
We are seeking an Associate Lab Data Engineer
We’re developing & implementing a bleeding-edge digital lab data infrastructure to maximize our ability to learn from our multi-disciplinary research. Namely, we’re configuring structured data capture that enables scale-up, automated insights generation, and application of modern machine learning techniques.
So far this year, we have rolled out an updated, purpose-built data model for our core molecular biology & strain engineering activities, our high-throughput screening platform, and our multi-scale fermentation teams. We have ambitious plans to continue expanding our lab data infrastructure to support all our research areas with automated, scalable, and user-friendly structured data capture.
The ideal candidate for this role eagerly seeks a central responsibility in bridging the wet- and dry-lab, leveraging research experience & skills in computer science.
Job summary
Initially, you will become an expert administrator of the new Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) within our lab data ecosystem, and assist in maintaining, further developing, and supporting full utilization of this among your research colleagues.
This foundation will facilitate ample opportunities to explore your interests & hone your skills in applied data science, scientific software engineering, bioinformatics, and implementation of modern machine learning/artificial intelligence tools.
Key contributions include:
- Driving improvement iterations on the data model through organizing requirements gathering meetings and designing & testing new schemas with users
- Helping build custom data ETL pipelines to expand automated data capture
- Taking ownership of data migration & curation efforts, in close collaboration with our researchers and with the support of your LIMS co-administrators across geographies
- Using collaboration skills & deep team integration to frequently plan & lead stake-holder meetings across groups to gain alignment on important design decisions
- Developing & updating guide documentation, tutorials, templates, and other training/onboarding materials
- Supporting our scientists and researchers (the system users) by answering LIMS-related questions & resolving daily issues/requests that arise
- Assist with data wrangling, data analysis & visualization, insights generation, and curating machine-learning-ready datasets
Requirements
Preferred candidates will possess experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Microbial genetic engineering, molecular biology, and/or other areas of biotech research
- Experience working with lab data in Benchling, or in other Laboratory Information Management Systems
- Writing SQL and using (or configuring) relational databases
The following areas of expertise will represent an advantage:
- Prior experience in a biotech or synthetic biology research lab/company - especially one with automated or high-throughput systems
- Prior bioinformatics experience and/or experience using scientific software
- Knowledge about protein biochemistry, assay development, and/or fermentation science
- Python programming and/or familiarity with using APIs to automate software interactions
- The software development lifecycle, including experience with: requirements gathering, data structures & system design, version control & collaborative programming best practices
- The data science lifecycle
Further, you can see yourself in the following:
- You hope to combine past research experience with your passion & skills in computational technology to bridge the gap between the wet-lab and the dry-lab
- You have excellent interpersonal verbal and written communication skills and the ability to discuss and present complex technical concepts with a variety of audiences and customers.
- You are an intellectually curious team player who embraces the challenges and excitement of a rapidly growing company.
