IFF-DTU Collaboration: Pioneering the Future of Biotechnology.
International Flavors & Fragrances Inc. (IFF), a global leader in scent, taste, nutrition & bioscience and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) have initiated a strategic partnership and created a joint research program with PhD students and postdocs together with researchers at DTU Bioengineering, DTU Biosustain and IFF.
Research Outline: Advanced Industrial Enzyme Technology for more sustainable fragrances
The research focus of the collaboration is advanced industrial enzyme technology. Our goal is to deliver lower impact processes and innovative products built on circular attributes, reducing our dependence on volatile supply chains. The research program will create new fundamental knowledge on the production, action, kinetics, and robustness of specific enzymes, providing new sustainable bio-based processes for an expanded, sustainable fragrance product portfolio based on new scientific insights.
Join an international multi-disciplinary program.
Building on the mutual synergies between DTU and IFF, you will work in an international multi-disciplinary program involving scientific areas of enzyme technology, chemistry, molecular biology, bioinformatics, analytical chemistry and chemical engineering. The program supports not only strong research, but also education at DTU of future global industrial biotech leaders, offering courses in sustainability management, entrepreneurship, technology change, and economics.
A Unique Opportunity for PhD Students
This is a unique opportunity to be part of an international multidisciplinary program funded by IFF. As an industrial PhD you will be employed by IFF. The positions will be located at the IFF Brabrand site in Denmark, with most of the work conducted at the DTU campus in Lyngby, Denmark. The candidate will be joining the DTU PhD school and supervised by dedicated researchers at either DTU Biosustain or DTU Bioengineering.
If you are seeking to establish your career as a top-notch scientist whose results can help build a more sustainable future, this PhD provides a great opportunity for fulfilling this ambition.
Responsibilities and Qualifications
The positions involve research work including enzyme discovery and engineering, detailed characterization of enzyme function, development of new analytical methods, and implementation of fermentation processes. We expect candidates to have a strong background in biotechnology, with both theoretical and hands-on experience in advanced enzyme technology, and a strong interest in bioinformatics, enzyme engineering and expression, screening assays, biocatalysis and process development.
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
You must also have demonstrated ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing in English, thrive in an international, extremely collaborative, and multidisciplinary environment.
Join Our Multidisciplinary Team
In this role, you’ll collaborate closely with scientists of multiple disciplines - chemists, biochemists, microbiologists, molecular biologists, computational biologists and fermentation engineers from both IFF and DTU. The successful candidate should be adaptive, self-motivated, passionate about science, and thrive within an international team environment.
DTU PhD Program Enrollment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the respective PhD programs at DTU Biosustain or DTU Bioengineering. For information about the DTU enrollment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study program, please see DTU’s rules for the PhD education.
Candidature Assessment
The hiring committee consists of representatives from IFF and DTU and the first round of interviews will be held last week of January 2025. You may apply prior to obtaining your master’s degree but cannot begin before having received it.
