Basecamp Research is seeking a passionate and enthusiastic Computational Protein Engineerto join the Data Science and Product Team. The candidate will make use of the largest and most comprehensive biodiversity knowledge proprietary to the company into relevant and valuable solutions for our commercial partners. This involves the exploration of our in-house biological and environmental data, coupled with traditional and AI-based bioinformatics tools to tackle some of the most exciting and unique challenges provided by our clients across pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and other domains.
The successful candidate will take ownership of various commercial projects across numerous fields. Some of the tasks expected of the candidate will include a thorough understanding of conceptual challenges presented by our clients, and by understanding the value of the Company’s biodata, derive bespoke sets of analyses towards maximising product success. In addition, the candidate will be encouraged to explore, develop, and optimise bioinformatics tools and pipelines to help continuously improve and expand the repertoire of in-house protein analytical and design strategies. This will be a strong collaborative role, working closely and on a daily basis with Data Science, Product, and Commercial Teams.
Responsibilities
Develop and run software towards compiling a bespoke set of protein candidates for our clients based on a communicated set of requirements. Responsibilities include, in coordination with other team members within and between teams:
- Manage deliveries of protein panels following comprehensive protein analyses including protein annotation, structural prediction, synthetic protein generation, docking analyses, etc.
- Investigate, benchmark, and integrate novel analyses into the analytical pipeline
- Collaborate with our in-house Data Engineering Team to help make existing pipelines more scalable and efficient, in addition to incorporating novel analyses into existing pipelines
- Write and document high-quality code and methodology of processes
- Contribute to problem-solving discussions within and across teams to generate ideas which will ultimately be useful for improving internal and external facets of product deliveries
Required skills and experiences
- A graduate (MSc/PhD) degree in the life sciences, computer science or related field
- 3+ years industry experience in computational protein analysis including protein annotation, structural prediction and analysis, docking, and protein design
- Experience in the techbio/biotech industry with a focus in product development (therapeutics, protein/drug discovery)
- Experience in and knowledge of current state-of-the-art and emerging technologies in understanding protein biology
- Experience with various programmatic scripting languages (python, perl, etc.) and shell scripting
- Excellent communication skills to both internal and external stakeholders, and ability to work closely and routinely with interdisciplinary teams
- Strong data visualisation skills
- Fluency in English
Advantageous skills and experiences
- Experience in bioinformatics tools used in metagenomics, including analyses of the “microbial dark matter”
- Experience in customer facing roles
- Experience using cloud solutions (AWS, GCP, etc.)
- Experience with git and Gitlab/Github
- Experience with Agile software development
