Job Overview

We are seeking a Fermentation Scientist with a strong background in process development and scale-up, specifically with fungi (including both filamentous fungi and yeasts), to join our team as a consultant or contractor. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in product and bioprocess development at various scales, particularly at the benchtop and pilot levels, as well as expertise in process design and modeling. This role has the potential to transition into a full-time position by Q4 2024 or Q2 2025, depending on project needs.

Our team is a small, dynamic, and interdisciplinary group of around 10 members, passionate about scaling our platform to drive innovations in food, materials, and biologics production. You will work closely with both the R&D and leadership teams to propel Anthology into its next critical phase of scaling.

Responsibilities and Duties

Contribute to the development of techno-economic (TEA) and life cycle cost analysis (LCA) for targeted products and fermentation processes.
Collaborate with the team to identify process innovations that enhance product yields, improve process reliability, and optimize overall performance.
Develop and implement operating and control strategies for benchtop bioreactors.
Provide technical guidance and expertise in troubleshooting and resolving fermentation-related issues.
Utilize lab-scale process data to develop detailed operational narratives.
Perform additional duties as needed.

Qualifications

PhD or Master’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline, with at least 3 years of industry experience.
Strong process modeling and analytical skills, with demonstrated experience in TEA and LCA modeling.
Hands-on experience in various manufacturing processes, including fermentation and downstream processing unit operations.
Proven success in scaling fermentation products and processes from lab to commercial scale, with experience across shake flask, benchtop, pilot, and commercial scales, requiring aseptic techniques.
Expertise in fungal bioprocess development, particularly with yeasts and filamentous fungi, is highly desirable.
Proficiency in batch, fed-batch, and continuous fermentation processes is preferred.
Up-to-date knowledge of current literature and trends in fermentation and downstream processing.

You are welcome to work on-site in Cambridge near Kendall and Central Square. Our new lab is housed at The Engine, a brand new 150K sq/ft facility designed for deep tech companies.
