Enifer, a spin-off company from VTT, was founded by five scientists in 2020 to develop and commercialize the PEKILO® technology further. This technology was originally developed and used by the Finnish forest industry at a commercial scale, and enables the biotechnological conversion of dilute side streams into a high-protein ingredient, PEKILO® mycoprotein. By transforming circular economy by-products into sustainable, planet-friendly protein, Enifer is pioneering a new approach to food systems—one that supports healthy, delicious diets for everyone while minimizing environmental impact.
Now we are gearing up the production of PEKILO® with a new €33M factory located in Kirkkonummi, Finland. The factory will be operational early 2026 and will upcycle food industry side streams into up to 3,000 tons of sustainable protein, annually. The plant will be first of its kind, producing a mycoprotein ingredient from side stream raw materials.
