The Environmental and Sustainability Specialist role exists to support environmental compliance and sustainability performance goals for the Midland-based N&B facilities, including two world-class cellulosic manufacturing units plus process and core R&D activities. The incumbent will manage risk while applying environmental rules for the site to maintain their license to operate. This role requires detailed knowledge of air, water, waste, reporting, and miscellaneous environmental regulations. The Environmental Specialist supports these facilities by providing interpretations on environmental regulations, implementing environmental requirements for improvement, capital, sustainability, and compliance projects, and providing short term and long-term solutions to operational planned and unplanned events. This role is expected to encourage and emphasize sustainability and continuous improvement as the lead for the site sustainability team. The Environmental and Sustainability Specialist is the liaison between business and corporate level sustainability communications and is responsible for implementing sustainability policies and objectives at the site level. In addition, this role implements compliance systems for federal and state regulations, permits, and IFF requirements. The Environmental and Sustainability Specialist works with corporate and local resources to ensure the management systems are functioning to ensure compliance with all requirements and in support of continued growth at the site.
Responsibilities
A successful E-Specialist would have the following:
Strong technical and interpersonal skills to work with operations stakeholders, regulators, environmental lawyers, iPark owner/tenants, along with other E/H&S specialists and technicians.
A working knowledge of environmental regulations.
A working knowledge of core principles of sustainability including definitions and practices.
Awareness of relevant environmental regulations and policies impacting operations.
Experience within manufacturing.
Ability to handle multiple projects and issues simultaneously.
Working in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to make difficult decisions.
Detailed oriented.
Ability to spend time in the field and provide basic observations on health and safety.
Required Qualifications
Prefer 4-yr EHS, Engineering or Technical degree and 5+ years of experience in an industrial setting; will consider 2 yr degree with 7+ years of experience.
Thorough understanding of Federal, State and Local Environmental Regulations.
Demonstrated ability in application of environmental regulations: Ability to independently read, consult, apply and provide guidance on Environmental Regulations in an industrial facility.
Solid written and oral communication skills and ability to work with many disciplines: legal, site leadership, cross company networks, etc.
