Description
The Utilities Engineer provides technical direction and operational leadership for the plant utility systems including boiler, cooling, ammonia refrigeration, water treatment and, potentially, support of a waste water treatment plant. The Utilities Engineer is responsible for the effective technical execution of all utilities startup and improvement projects within the facility. This role is a lead operating engineer and utility project engineer for the plant with opportunities to optimize utilities performance at a renovated plant, lead technical approach to operations in utilities (manage and mentor staff), and independently identify and develop cost savings projects and safety related project opportunities in line with business objectives.

Summary of Essential Job Functions:
- Provide technical leadership on design, commissioning and operations of Utilities to maintain facility efficiency, productivity and compliance with local codes and regulations
- Act as manager for boiler and WWTP operators
- Manages critical control variable systems and implements corrective actions for out of control variables in collaboration with Quality and Engineering
- Identify chronic Utility performance issues and implement improvement plans
- Identify opportunities to improve facility efficiency through utility improvement projects that are in line with business financial objectives. Develop utility efficiency goals.
- Collaboration with Maintenance, Environmental and Operations to establish safe, compliant and cost effective maintenance and operating plans.
- Develops the technician/operator qualification matrix requirements for utilities
- Leads development of utility SOPs
- Participates in vacation coverage of Utility area as part of the team
- Obtain all necessary certifications and licenses to provide full coverage of continuous utility operations and develop expert level knowledge in utility systems.
Requirements
- Mechanical or related engineering degree or Technical/Vocational Degree with work experience in a technical utilities role of broad scope.
- Knowledge of and training in ammonia refrigeration systems and steam generation systems required
- Broad experience in industrial utilities and desire to make significant contributions to the technical management of plant utilities systems at the site over time
- Experience managing utility related vendors and contractors preferred
- Experience coaching operating staff preferred
- Industrial waste water plant operations, HVAC, and compressed air systems design or operational experience preferred
- Licensed Boiler (Class A or B) operator or certified WWTP operator is a plus
- Ammonia emergency response and ammonia system operator certifications is a plus
- Experience and training in Root Cause Failure Analysis and Equipment Functional Analysis is a plus
- Experience in food safety protocols for construction projects is a plus
- Capable and willing to obtain utility certifications/licensures as needed.
- Minimal (<10%) travel to other PURIS sites and external training programs as needed
